International Housing Conference Münster
On Friday 2nd of August the Münster School of Architecture invites to the International Conference “Affordable and Sustainable Housing”. International speakers will present projects and studies related not only to China but also to the international context. Panel discussions will reflect new strategies for affordable and sustainable housing. rethinkhousing, an international ideas competition for a case-study in Shenzhen, was launched in spring 2013. Results will be awarded and discussed on the conference.
The need for acceptable living standards for the economically weaker segments is the major topic at the Affordable and Sustainable Housing Conference in Münster. The on-going cooperation between the msa | Münster School of Architecture, the HIT / SGS Harbin Institute of Technology – Shenzhen Graduate School and the Università IUAV di Venezia joines academic forces and local partners in order to investigate the challenge of affordable housing in Shenzhen. This is the point of departure for a broader field of research looking at both urban design strategies and the construction of prototypes related to mass housing.
As invited speaker, Anne-Katrin Fenk will give a keynote on “How national and international concepts on affordable housing in India avoid implementation”
Quting offical numbers, more than 24 million housing units are missing in India for the low income group (LIG) and the economic weaker section (EWS). Despite an enormous building boom, especially in the fast growing urban areas, which has to include a percentage of affordable housing units by law, the proportion of affordable housing to other Housing units is shrinking. And even if affordable housing is built, concepts of a liveable surrounding seems mostly to fail. The talk is about the current situation on one of the most important topics within a society: housing. It gives an inside view on the situation in India, analyses the existing national and international strategies, points out their strategic failure, and sums up with alternative concepts.
